Sharks Defenseman Boyle looking for multi-year contract extension

Posted by Landon Ewaniuk on September 16, 2013 at 3:10 PM

After the 2013-2014 season, the San Jose Sharks could be without three veteran players. Forwards Patrick Marleau and Joe Thornton and defenseman Dan Boyle are all on the final year of their current contracts.

On Saturday, Dan Boyle made it clear that his agent is negotiating with the Sharks front office for a multiple-year contract. He is in the final year of a six-year, $40 million deal negotiated with Tampa Bay before being traded to San Jose. This year he is set to earn $6.67 million.

Boyle turned 37 this summer, but is confident that despite his, um, advanced years, he still has enough juice in him to be effective on the blueline.

Boyle told CSNCalifornia:

“There’s a lot of miles left,” he said. “You’ve got to keep in mind that even though I’m a little bit older in age, I’ve only got 850 games. I don’t have 11 or 12 hundred. There’s plenty of miles left in here.”

Ok, so Boyle's math skills aren't the greatest; he has actually played 879 games AND 100 playoff games. We will let that one slip. (Stats courtesy of Hockey Reference)

Signing Boyle for an extended contract would be a good move for the Sharks. He's an exceptional teammate on and off the ice. In 46 games last season, he scored 7 goals and logged 20 assists, slightly below his average but not awful for a strike-shortened season. Even when his minutes were decreased and he was replaced on the penalty-kill unit, he took the move in stride.  Always with a team-first attitude, he never complained, but rather praised his teammates for their work on the blueline. As SJSharks101.com has mentioned before, San Jose needs to resign Boyle for both his play and his leadership off the ice. Because of his age, a massive, high-priced contract isn't viable, but the Sharks should end up signing Boyle to the end of his hockey career.
