If any team is going to be successful they need more than just their stars to perform. Everyone on the team has be able to step into the breach and save the team when it needs it. The St. Louis Blues just endured a terrible five game losing streak after starting goalie Jaro Halak went down with an injury. Backup Brian Elliot, who shared the Jennings Trophy for the best goalie tandem with Halak last year, was in net for those five losses. What to do? Since Halak was still on the shelf, Blues Coach Ken Hitchcock called on rookie goalie Jake Allen to step "unto the breach" and he did so remarkably. For a start he defeated the Red Wings at the Joe in Detroit, always a tough game for the Blues. For an encore he beat the Flames last night in impressive fashion. This included an amazing save where Allen stopped a shot in mid air with his stick and then caught it in his glove. Perhaps most importantly, these two victories have put the Blues back on track. Given how the season started with such promise, the losses had begun to wear on the Blues faithful, The losing streak is behind us now, full speed ahead to the top of the Western Conference!
