NHL Update: Blues sign Wade Redden to one-year contract

Posted by Landon Ewaniuk on January 19, 2013 at 2:50 AM

Days after being waived and bought out by the New York Rangers, defenseman Wade Redden has found a new home in the National Hockey League.

Redden agreed to a deal Friday with the St. Louis Blues, a one-year, $800,000 contract.

"Wade is a solid two-way defenseman," general manager Doug Armstrong said in a statement released by the team. "We believe his experience will complement and add stability to our defensive core."

Redden is scheduled to arrive in St. Louis this weekend and undergo a physical on Sunday.

Redden, 35, has spent the past two seasons with the Connecticut Whale, the Rangers' American Hockey League affiliate. Last season, he posted four goals and 20 points in 49 games

.

The 6-foot-2, 205-pound Redden is a veteran of 13 NHL seasons including 11 years in Ottawa and, most recently, two with the Rangers (2008-2010). Overall, Redden has appeared in 994 NHL games totaling 106 goals, 450 points and 654 penalty minutes. The Lloydminster, Saskatchewan native was originally drafted by the New York Islanders with the No. 2 pick in the 1995 NHL Draft.

The HockeyFanLand Insight::

It's great to see Wade Redden back in the National Hockey League, I've always liked the way he played the game, and I believe he still can be a quality NHL defenseman. I don't think there would have been a better fit in the league for Redden’s return then the St. Louis Blues, the team that allow the fewest goals goals against per game, (1.89). Wade Redden will be able to ease his way back into NHL life on the team that is Stanley Cup caliber.

$800,000 is not a huge risk by St. Louis Blues management, especially if Wade Redden plays inspired hockey. If Wade Redden begins looking anything like he did in his former Ottawa Senators days St. Louis hit the jackpot, and fantasy hockey owners should not hesitate to add Wade Redden to their starting roster.

Redden is a great addition to an already strong defensive team. Go Blues!
