Mike Green signs three-year extension with Washington Capitals

Posted by Landon Ewaniuk on July 17, 2012 at 2:30 AM

As it turns out, Mike Green did not accept the Washington Capitals' qualifying offer of $5 million for one year. But the Caps weren't going to let him get away. According to Katie Carrera of the Washington Post, the two sides have agreed to a three-year deal worth $18.25 million.

I was a bit surprised to hear that Green had turned down the original offer, considering he only managed to register seven points and only 32 games played a season ago. Having said this, I'm sure the Washington Capitals are excited to have Mike Green in the fold for three more seasons. This is the type of player that has the ability to be the very best at his position in the entire National Hockey League when is that 100%. Green has posted a remarkable 149 pointsover the last couple seasons that he was health.

If Green ever commits to learning tricks that improve his defense in combination with his dynamic offense from the "D" position he will  no doubt win multiple Norris trophies. Ultimately, for this deal to pay dividends Green must avoid  future encounters with the injury bug.

Good article Landon - I was also surprised that Washington acquiesced to Green's demands for more cash in light of his abysmal past 2 seasons.

I disagree on your point regarding Green improving his defensive prowess. Washington's major success in recent years has been as an offensive team. A major catalyst for this offence is Green playing a position that's a hybrid of forward and defence - a sort of rover position. When Green jumps up into the play it makes other teams play Washington's game - trading offensive chances. It also gives the opposition something to worry about defensively other than Alex Ovechkin - and that frees up Ovechkin to score. Mike Green playing his own specialized position was the reason for Washington's President's Trophy wins, and seemingly they just needed to shore up the goaltending to compete based on that philosophy. Instead, despite improvements in goal they went to the leaguewide traditional defensive mindset. What happened? Washington was no longer a President's Trophy threat, Alex Ovechkin's production plummeted and the Capitals squeaked in to the playoffs. Karl Alzner, John Carlson and Roman Hamrlik can handle the defensive responsibilities. If Mike Green can get back to scoring 30 goals, Washington will get back to winning important Hockey games.

On a side note - how annoyed must Green be that Erik Karlsson won the Norris?
