Justin Schultz is now an Edmonton Oiler!
I am proud of the Edmonton Oilers and their ability to land talented college defenseman Justin Schultz. Originally Drafted by the Anaheim Ducks, Schultz was unable to come to terms on a contract with the team. During the last week of May, 2012, Schultz officially "de-registered" from the University of Wisconsin triggering a process that made him an unrestricted free agent (UFA). According to league rules, from the time Anaheim was given notice of the de-registration from school, they had a 30-day exclusive window to try to sign him or trade him.
Anaheim was ultimately unable to sign him. On June 30, 2012, Schultz agreed to a two year entry-level contract with the Edmonton Oilers.
As an Edmonton Oilers fan I am proud of the club's ability to pursue such a talent. Defense has been a major sore spot for this club the past number of seasons. Schultz put a magnificent numbers in the college ranks, registering 113 points and 121 games (40 -73). Just about every NHL club wanted to sign this kid. Edmonton's pitch included phone calls from Wayne Gretzky and Paul Coffey. Shortly after, Justin Schultz signed a two-year deal with the Edmonton Oilers. $925,000 per, with a signing bonus of $92,500. Bonuses $2.85 million, for an overall cap hit of $3.775.
Yes, I am a little bit biased here as the Edmonton Oilers are the team cheer for. But I think it was easy to make this decision. This player will fit in perfectly with the other extremely young and talented pieces.
Thank you, for choosing Edmonton Justin Schultz and all the best!
