No that is not a typo. In the toughest division in hockey since the lockout (what division has had more Cup champions since then?), the Blues are in first. I do not know the last time that the Blues were in first after a signifcant amount of the season past, but I would suggest that Chris Pronger was patroling the blueline when that last happened. The Blues are 24-12-5 with 53 points, which is good for second in points behind the Vancouver Canucks (55). It is true that both the Chicago Blackhawks (52) and the ever present Detroit Red Wings (51) are right behind, yet this is still a remarkable situation for the Blues. They are in the thick of the playoff race. Those of us who have watched the Blues these past years have been waiting for this to begin to happen. The pieces have seemed to be in place, yet waiting for it to gel can be hard. It is happening now. Why? Two main reasons in my view. First, they have continued to be a very solid defensive team. During their 4-0 victory over the Colorado Avalanche, the Blues allowed only 15 shots on goal! That is the essence of responsible defensive hockey- limit the shots. Furthermore, both goalies have been solid, with Brian Elliot having an all-star first half (15-5, 1.62 GAA!!!). Second, they scoring like they have not in previous years. This includes a number of players including, Jason Arnott, Alex Steen (though currently injured) T.J. Oshie, Alex Pietrangelo, Kevin Shattenkirk and I think Chris Stewart may be waking up as well. When Andy McDonald returns they will be even better. This is just the beginning for the St. Louis Blues!
