2012 NHL Playoffs: second-round predictions

Posted by Landon Ewaniuk on April 27, 2012 at 1:50 PM

The New Jersey Devils rounded out the teams that advanced to the second-round of the 2012 Stanley Cup playoffs Thursday night on the strength of rookie Adam Henrique's incredible Game 7 performance. Henrique opened and closed the scoring in double overtime to end the Florida Panthers first playoff appearance in ten years.

*****

My second round Stanley Cup playoff predictions are as follows:

Eastern conference:

(1) New York Rangers VS. (7) Washington Capitals

(Capitals in 6 )

The Caps were my Stanley Cup pick at the beginning of the season, I can't look back now. Knocking off last year's Stanley Cup Champions should give the club a tremendous confidence boost.

(5) Philadelphia Flyers VS. (6) New Jersey Devils

(Flyers in 5

If the flyer offense is anywhere near what we witnessed in round one the New Jersey Devils are in trouble as they narrowly escaped a for less extreme offense from the Florida Panthers. Ride Philadelphia Flyers in any fantasy setting.

Eastern Conference Final:

Washington Capitals VS Philadelphia Flyers

(Capitals in 7)

Western Conference:

(2) St. Louis Blues VS (8 ) Los Angeles Kings

(Kings in 7

For me, this is going to be the tightest playoff series of 2012. Featuring my "dark horse" pick St. Louis Blues against my Western Conference Finals pick Los Angeles Kings. Reuniting Jeff Carter and Mike Richards, this is what Los Angeles made the big moves for.

(3) Phoenix Coyotes VS (4) Nashville Predators

(Predators in 6

So much is being made of the matchup between Mike Smith and Pekka Rinne this series. Fact is, Rinne will badly out-play Smith taking away the Coyotes advantage from the previous round.

Western Conference Final:

Los Angeles Kings VS Nashville Predators

(Kings in 6)

The ultimate fantasy hockey lineup for round 2

Alexander Radulov, RW

Claude Giroux, C

Alex Ovechkin, LW

Drew Doughty, D

Alex Pietrangelo, D

Pekka Rinne, G

Funny how you said you picked the Caps to win before the season started. I had the Kings before the season started, and the Caps to win the President's Trophy. Throughout the season I lost all faith in both teams as LA couldn't score to save their lives and Washington squeaked into the playoffs with a 65 point season from Ovechkin. Well, now that the playoffs started my favored teams have emerged from the depths of mediocrity to become Stanley Cup threats. Fortunately I had put my $ where my mouth is and have Vegas tickets for both the Capitals and the Kings to win it all!
